2008 - Semester 1 - ITDN211 - Interior Hardware: The Brief

This assignment examines the constructed interior environment in light of its physical and concrete manifestations as well as its impact on inhabitation as an act of dwelling and living. It observes the intimate relationship between body and matter and accepts that there is active reciprocal and dynamic interface between that which is temporal and ephemeral and that which appears to be solid, stable and effectively more permanent. For the sake of maintaining a specific focus, this assignment and its accompanying exercises locate the notion of 'dwelling' within the everyday domestic sphere

Two primary objectives structure this assignment:

- To document and analyse the conventional and normative constitution of interior architecture as understood through spatial and tectonic elements
- To probe question and reconceptualise these conditions in the context of speculative design gestures

These objectives are couched in a series of four short one-week exercises:

ENTER: doors thresholds, passages, journeys, openings, entrance, access
BREATHE–VIEW: windows, looking, gap, filter, screen, pane, frame, smell
ENVELOPE: enclosure surroundings, surface, décor, wrap, floors, ceiling
SIT: posture, furniture, furnishings, spatial organization, circulation

We were asked to document our most developed exercise through powerpoint or video. Bellow is my video relating the envelope exercise.

my lounge. a space that connects all other rooms in my house. no direct access to the exterior. i am very at home. it is a space i share with the people i am close to. centre of the house. i am so familiar with the space that I cant see it. i cant analyse it properly. i need to isolate myself and it. disengage with it and document it as a outsider would. for 5 days i did not inhabit the space in the way i usually would. only passing through and documenting the textures of the space. how does your impression of a place change when you no longer inhabit it? the textural envelope i produced was very factual and sterile. the clear or opaque materials i used for the structures depict the lounge as a gallery type space. something for people to look through, examine and scrutinise.

2007 - Semester 2 - Studio 2 - Strangely familiar

My latest brief for Studio is called strangly familiar. It involves fusing two ramdomly assigned objects to form a new hybrid object. My two objects are Tea Bag and Spring. At this point i am exploring the objects seperatly, looking at their ontology and how they are defined. Here is a few pictures of my current investigations.

My final hybrid object is an extremely stretchy, reusable shopping bag. The outside of the bag is square but the actual cavity on the inside is shaped like an upside-down capital letter 'T' (hence tea bag). The strap is made of wide elastic and the bag itself is made of stretch cotton (Hence Spring). I have printed on the bag, the images and advertising found on recognisable disposable plastic shopping bags. I did this using an interesting technique I discovered while researching bags, where I ironed plastic bags between layers of paper and fabric. The images printed on the bag were transferred, and the plastic came out flattened and paper like. This can also be used to join bags together as the plastic melts, smooths and sticks to itself.

2007 - Semester 2 - Computers for Designers - T-shirt slogan design

Bellow is my final concept as well as some initial concepts from a 'Computers for Designers' paper I am taking. The brief is to create a T-shirt graphic using Adobe Illustrator to reflect a slogan chosen from a given list. The slogan I have chosen is the quote from famous singer and political activist Joan Baez "Action is the antidote to despair"

This getting close to my final shirt. it came from the idea of using a plant to represent depression. The idea is that the person wearing the shirt's face becomes the flower. i got that idea from a fish tshirt (shown bellow)

2007 - Semester 2 - Computers for Designers - character mash up

This was my first computers assignment. The brief was to create a character and its environment in Adobe Photoshop using a minimum of 5 source images. It was to be presented in A6 (postcard) format. The character I designed was an otherworldly creature lost at sea. She was a representation of somebody lost in life. (colours are not well represented on the web)

2007 - Semester 2 - Studio 2 - Skinny Volumes

This Brief is composed of two parts, a studio based class and a drawing class. Both fall under the same brief but with different requirements. The brief was all about books (hence skinny volumes). Each student was given a genre and a location to base their work on. I was given Cooking and Checkout.

We were to combine our two words to produce a meaningful art or design object.

My final Piece

Drawing class. Composition was our focus and we were to produce a series of 8 pieces of work.

Compositions one and two - black and white only 40% black and 60% white and vice versa
Compositions three and four - 20% black and 80% white and vice versa introduce genre and location imagery
Compositions five and six - introduce colour and use the same imagery.
composition seven - using one or all previous compositions (reduced/enlarged/photocopied/cut up) make a book 900mm squared (i.e. 3cm x 3cm or 1cm x 9cm)
Composition eight - take one page from the booklet made as composition seven and enlarge it to 6 A1 sheets of paper joined.

2007 - Semester 2 - introduction to photography - Walkabout

Our first assignment was titled 'walkabout'. We were given a route encompassing a large area of Wellington (Brooklyn area) from which were to find a subject and shoot either a sequence or series of photographs. I chose to look at organic shadows on various textured surfaces. The images are 5x7 inch taken on a film SLR camera.

2007 semester one - creative studio one - Self Portrait

This Assignment was split into 2 parts. The first, to develop a self-portrait of yourself and where you fit in your immediate social surroundings, the second, to depict yourself in a broader context and how you fit into the world. I produced two final constructions one for each part. My theme throughout was to show people who i am by telling them who and what I’m not. My work let people get to know me through a process of elimination.

The first sculpture was a large stack of foam core boxes with images and text all over the outside listing everything I’m not. There was a list of every culture I don’t belong to, characteristics I don’t have, things I don’t believe in, things I don’t understand etc.. By stacking each of these 'building blocks' together they become a 'negative' representation of me.

In the second part I began to describe all the ways I did NOT fit into the world and discovered there were going to be infinite possibilities. Therefore I decided to incorporate the scientific and mathematical symbol for infinity into a 3D wall hanging. It is covered in small boxes, predominantly white and the symbol for infinity centred in black. Each black box has one of an infinite number of words describing what the world is not. The white boxes, covered in a mash of things I am not.

2007 semester one - creative studio one - cuba street

In this brief we were looked at Wellington Central's Cuba Street and were asked to construct a 3D sculpture representing an aspect of Cuba Street. This is my final sculpture. I intended to depict Cuba Street as a compact ball of activity and energy. I decided to use wire as my final material for its commercial appearance (parallels that of Cuba Street). The curves make the sculpture more welcoming and friendly. It is unpredictable and busy, just as I perceive Cuba Street to be.
